Rolwaling Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek
Overview
The Rolwaling Himal lies west of the Khumbu region and is separated by one of the most demanding high mountain passes in Nepal, the 5,750-meter Tashi Lapcha Pass. This historic pass was first crossed at the end of the legendary 1951 Everest reconnaissance expedition by New Zealand climbers Earle Riddiford and Sir Edmund Hillary. Despite its rich mountaineering history, the Rolwaling region remains relatively unknown and far less visited than Nepal’s more popular trekking areas, making it a true hidden gem for adventurous trekkers.
The trek begins in the remote Rolwaling Valley of eastern Nepal, ascending through isolated Sherpa and Tamang villages, pristine alpine forests, and dramatic glacial landscapes. As the journey progresses, trekkers face the challenging ascent of Tashi Lapcha Pass, a high-altitude crossing that requires excellent fitness and prior high-mountain trekking experience.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends into the famous Everest (Khumbu) region, offering a striking contrast between remote wilderness and well-established trekking routes. The trek concludes at Lukla, followed by a scenic flight back to Kathmandu, completing one of Nepal’s most adventurous and rewarding trans-Himalayan trekking experiences.
