There are numerous myths surrounding the creation of Phoksundo Lake, which was formerly known as Phuksundo but is now officially called Phoksundo., including legends of water and an oil bowl carried by a demon. Scientifically, however, the lake was formed by glacial water flowing from the north and being naturally dammed by a massive rockslide deposit in the south. Famous for its magnificent turquoise color that changes with light, Phoksundo Lake is the second deepest lake in Nepal, reaching a depth of 145 meters. It lies at an elevation of 3,640 meters within Shey-Phoksundo National Park in the Dolpa District.
